Salinas

Salinas was founded as a stagecoach stop in 1856 and began to grow as a commercial center for cattle ranching not long after. The name of the region was derived from the Spanish word for “salt,” referring to the salt marshes that once covered much of the area. Today, Salinas offers a unique blend of climate, natural resources and people. The Salinas Valley is known as “The Salad Bowl of the World” for its production of lettuce, broccoli, mushrooms and strawberries, just to name a few of their crops. The climate is also ideal for the floral industry and grape vineyards planted by world-famous vintners.

Residents and visitors of Salinas should take the opportunity to see the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium located in nearby Monterey. The aquarium offers special events, exciting exhibits, new animals and family activities. It is recognized as the nation’s finest aquarium and listed as one of the top-rated family attractions in the United States. Located on the historic Cannery Row just minutes from Carmel and Pebble Beach, Monterey Bay Aquarium has something for everyone.
